Apollo launches DBE in Eastern India
Kolkata, Oct 14 (UNI) Now it would be easier for the doctors to explore the 'Dark Continent', a term used by the medical fraternity to describe the small intestine, after the Apollo Hospitals here announced the launch of the Double Balloon Endoscopy (DBE).
Talking to newspersons here, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital's Gastroenterology department head Dr Mahesh Goenka said earlier it was very difficult and complicated to diagnose and visualise the intestinal disorders.
However, the DBE technique, preoperative endoscopy and capsule endoscopy would assist in the precise diagnosis and rapid treatment, he said.
Stressing upon the cause of intestinal disorders he said, irregular food habits, intake of pesticides and insecticides in food and environmental hazards were the main causes of intestinal cancer.
''Patients affected with intestinal disorders range fron 28 to 56 years, with complaints like rectal bleeding, infertility, diarrhoea, increase urinary frequency, irritable bowel movements and abscess, '' he added.
The treatment had 90 per cent success rate, with affordable cost and minimum operation hours, Mr Goenka added.
Pointing out the process of treatment, he said a miniature camera of one inch when swallowed by the patient gives about 60,000 pictures of the intestine without any pain and finds out the cause of bleeding.
''Through DBE we can treat the dilated narrow areas and help remove foreign bodies, intesinal lesions, polyps or any carcinogenic structures,'' he said.
He also declared that a two day workshop here on October 14 and 15 would spread awareness about this latest introduction where 20 leading doctors from various parts of the country along with Dr T Leung from Hongkong would provide guidelines for the appropriate used of DBE.
