Surgey Krylov beats Sergei Smirnov, shoots into the lead
Margao, Oct 13 (UNI) Russian Sergey Krylov (4) shot into the lead by winning a battle royal against compatriot Sergei Smirnov (3) in an exciting fourth round match of the 11th Individual World Chess Championship being played at Varca in South Goa.
Krylov had a double bishop advantage and methodically developed two of his rooks, one at f5 and the other supporting the same at f1.
In a crucial position that arose between the two former World champions, Smirnov was allowed to control the open d file.
meanwhile, Krylov launched a vicious attack along the g file and threathened to capture d5. In order to wither away the attack, Smirov opted for a queen exchange and thereby lost a pawn. In the rook bishop vs rook-knight ending favoring Krylov, Smirnov blunder away a full rook on the 39th move and laid down his arms to Krylov.
The Indians had a comparatively good day when National Champion Srikrishna Udapa( 2.5) held Asian Runner up Hasanalli Ghadiri Dhendi (2.5) and Gaurav Gadodia, Swapnil Shah and Rajesh Oza scored fantastic wins. India's Swapnil Shah (1971) defeated Brazilian Crisolon in 22 moves. Starting with a Ruylupez opening, Swapnil forced Crisolon to blunder at the 17th move and won easily.
Mohammad Riza of Iran scored the shortest game of the world Chess championship when he checkmate Jose Lucena Vaz (Brazil) in just nine moves of sicilian defence. Iranian Manager Ms Marizeh Jalal said this win will prove to be a moral booster for the entire Iranian contigent.
Iranian lady Leila Zarezadeh, playing among men scored an attacking win over Madan Bagayatkar of India in 40 moves of Italian Defence. Women World champion Lubov Zsiltzov (2284) agreed for a draw with Carlos Larduet (2308) of Cuba in queen's gambit defence.
After the four rounds Russian Sergey Kirlov leads with four points and three players Rafal Gunajew (Poland), Jorgen Magnusson (Sweden) and Sergej Wassim( Russia) shared the second spot with 3.5 points.
