Polling was peaceful barring minor incidents, say police

Chennai, Oct 13 (UNI) Barring a few minor incidents, the first phase of the elections to local bodies in Tamil Nadu were conducted in a peaceful manner today, according to State Director General of Police (DGP) D Mukherjee.

Talking to newsmen here, he said some minor incidents were reported in Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts. Polling was peaceful otherwise, he added.

City Police Commissioner Mrs Letika Saran said the police arrested 311 persons, including AIADMK MLAs Sekar Babu and Kalairajan in connection with incidents of violence in different parts of the city.

Mr Kalairajan and Mr Sekar Babu attempted to attack a police party, following which they were arrested, she said.

She said Mr Sekar Babu was later admitted to Government General hospital here, when he complained of chest pain, she added.

She said 'road roko' agitations were conducted in 12 places in the city ''without any purpose'' and police chased the agitators away and restored to normalcy.

She said the police would definitely take action against those involved in any offence.
