Commonwealth Games to be virtual reality on TV

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) Watching 2010 Commonwealth Games on TV will be a virtual reality with much sharper and detailed pictures made possible by the High Definition broadcasting.

Doordarshan is considering launching a pilot project on H D TV with the objective of introducing it in a full-fledged manner before the Games.

The plan was revealed by Broadcast Engineering Society of India and Doordarshan officials at seminar on "High Definition: Emerging Scenario" organised by Sony India Pvt. Ltd and Broadcast Engineering Society (India) here.

The project is proposed in the 11th five-year plan. Doordarshan is also planning to give HD TV on its DTH plan, an official said.

High Definition TV is the biggest innovation in broadcast technology since the introduction of colour broadcast. HDTV offers up to five times more detailed and sharper picture than the current TV sets.

This might bring about a gamut change in the broadcast industry like it did for the 1982 Commonwealth Games with the strategic support given for bringing colour to television sets in India.

The seminar was chaired by Mr. Ganesan, President, BES with panel of speakers comprising Shunichi Fujioka&Dinesh Sawhney from Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Ltd and D. Ray from Doordarshan.

Mr Ganesan gave key inputs from his vast experience and addressed many of the key queries regarding the broadcasting scenario.

Globally, there has been a steady rise in the HD programming to the extent that it is now becoming mainstream.

As an example, for 3004 Athens Olympic, 10 broadcasters had requested for acquisition and distribution of HD signals.
