Civic polls peaceful in south TN

Madurai, Oct 13 (UNI) The first phase of local body elections in the nine districts of South Tamil Nadu passed off peacefully, barring minor incidents today.

Elections were held for the Tirunelveli Municipal Corporation, 19 municipalities, 54 panchayat unions and 73 town panchayats besides hundreds of village panchayats.

Brisk polling was witnessed right from the beginning in all the districts.

Many rebel candidates also tested their electoral fortunes.

Elaborate security arrangements were made for the peaceful conduct of polls.
