AIU nabs two for smuggling goods worth Rs 19.3 lakh

Mumbai, Oct 13 (UNI) The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials have arrested two persons for attempting to smuggle in goods worth Rs 19.3 lakh at Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport here.

Mukesh Kumar Jain and Ranjan Karalkar who arrived here from Singapore yesterday, refused to declare whether they were in possession of any dutiable goods. A search of their baggage resulted in recovery of goods such as camera lenses and watches worth Rs 19,37,075.

Joint Commissioner of Customs (AIU) Satish Kumar said the duo were planning to smuggle the goods. The goods were confiscated under the provisions of the Customs Act and they were arrested.

Mr Kumar said the two passengers are being interrogated.
