International cow meet to be held in Karnataka from April 21
New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) Sri Raghaveswara Bharati Swamiji of Sri Ramachandrapura Shimoga is planning to hold an international cow meet for nine days from April 21 next year at Hosanagara town in Karnataka to discuss various measures to make people realise the value of this holy animal.
The meeting is likely to be inaugurated by President A P J Abdul Kalam it would provide an opportunity to representatives from all continents to discuss the value and virtues of this animal, Swamiji told reporters.
He expressed concern that cows are being ignored in the country owing to lack of awareness.
People are indiscriminately intermixing the breeds, and much to the horror of all right-thinking citizens, they are allowing cow slaughter at an alarming rate of 20 cows per minute. While only 236 slaughter houses existed in India prior to independence, today there were 36,000 leading to the virtual extinction of several irreplaceable breeds. Only 33 native breeds out of 70 breeds survive now, he said.
