India's Semiconductor consumption to touch USD 3.09 billion by 2010

Bangalore, Oct 12 (UNI) Semiconductor consumption in India will shot upto USD 3.09 billion by 2010 from the present USD 1.18 billion, Cadence Design Systems Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Fister said today.

Delivering his keynote address at the CDNLive India User Conference here, he said that the emerging economies like India had led to a burgeoning demand for electronics. Three Cs -- consumer electronics, computing and communications had a lot of common design, technology and design capability requirements. However, communications was expected to be the major contributor by the year 2010.

Of the total semiconductor consumption in India, consumer electronics accounted for 35 per cent, followed by computing and communications, at 27 per cent and 23 per cent respectively, he added.

Mr Fister said the three C markets had a lot of common design, technology and design capability requirements. All three had a low power requirements and design complexity. Wireless connectivity, VIOP, increasing software content and power management were the technology trends common to all three markets. As the design complexity across the custom, digital PCB and packaging increased, a holistic level of capabilities was now required.

Referring to the new challenges faced by the semiconductor makers he said, ''Platform Based Design (PDB) is a viable solution to address System on a Chip (SoC) design challenges. In this approach, some portion of the chip's architecture was predefined for a specific type of application, enabling extensive design reuse which will provides faster time-to-market.''
