Govt-Maoists summit talks postponed till Oct 15

Kathmandu, Oct 12: The ongoing talks between the Nepalese government and Maoists were today postponed till October 15, as both sides agreed to do more preparatory work on surmounting key differences, especially the future of the monarchy and arms collection.

The meeting which began at 0230 hrs local time ended after one houras the two sides could not reach agreement on any of the contentious issues, even as Prime Minister Koirala was expected to disclose a new proposal of resolving the crisis on these three issues.

''PM Koirala will table a three-point special proposal for the ongoing talks'', Ram Baran Yadav, a senior Nepali Congress leader earlier told UNI, but did not elaborate on the proposal.

The talks have been postponed as both the Seven Party Alliance and the Maoist leaders agreed that more homework was needed to arrive at a consensus on the major issues of the talks, coordinator of government talks team and Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said in a press conference just after the meeting.

''Both the sides are concerned for the long lasting peace in Nepal and we need a lot of homework for that'', he said.

Similarly, coordinator of Maoists talk team Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that the talks are going in a positive direction and a lot of preparation is needed for the conclusive declaration.

The Govt-Maoists talks had started on Sunday and on Tuesday they had agreed to hold the election of Constituent assembly by either April or May next year.
