Centre to set up Doppler radar station at Paradeep in Orissa
New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) In view of the fact that the coastal areas of Orissa are highly cyclone-prone, the Union Science and Technology Ministry has decided to set up a Doppler radar station at Paradeep to monitor weather.
This was conveyed by Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal to Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik when the latter called on him here today.
Mr Sibal said sites have also been identified at three other locations at Balasore, Gopalpur and Sambalpur for setting up Doppler radar stations.
The Chief Minister sought sanction of new post-graduate courses in Marine Biotechnology and General Biotechnology for Berhampur University and Fakir Mohan University at Balasore respectively.
Mr Patnaik said the state would greatly benefit from the offering of the courses due to their economic potential and requirement of trained manpower in the field.
The Marine Biology Department of Berhampore University is one of the oldest in the country.
Mr Sibal assured the Chief Minister that the sanction would be given to the courses after receiving the proposals.
Mr Patnaik also requested for early sanction of the proposed Biotechnology Incubator project at Bhubaneswar. The Incubator, which will be part of the Biotechnology Park, will nurture innovative ideas into successful business ventures.
It will enable the park to get infrastructural facilities such as laboratories, equipment for which the state government has provided 100 acres of prime land in the state capital.
