Time to re-engineer the British-time processes: Sam Pitroda

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) Calling for standardisation of e-governance, the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) today urged the Government to re-engineer the age-old working procedures before computerising them.

''Unless and until we re-engineer the British-time processes, it will be of no use to computerise them,'' NKC Chief Sam Pitroda told reporters at an Open House session organised by the Confedration of Indian Industry here today.

The NKC Chief stressed upon standardisation of things, such as uniform certificates pan-India, through web-based service and latest technology.

He said that these initiatives would play a vital role in improving the governance, as it would help the country access all informations easily.

Another major concern, he said, was to utilise the country's traditional knowledge in various sectors like health, small and medium enterprises.

He said that the country has 12,000 medicinal plants unique to its climate, which must be protected and utilised properly, adding that it would help the country become independent and medicinal hub around the world.

The Commission stressed on access to knowledge, which includes literacy, libraries, translation and portals, language, library.

Pointing out the country's huge potential in translation industry, he said that it can create half-a-million jobs and suggested the Government to spend up to Rs 500 crore for promoting it.

NKC was constituted a year ago by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with a view to devising and guiding reforms that will transform the country into a strong and vibrant knowledge economy in coming years.
