Guwahati, Oct 11 (UNI) Assorted images of bio-resources indigenous to the state are now in display for public viewing thanks to novel effort of Assam Science Society that has set up a biodiversity photo gallery in the city.
The gallery which was inaugurated by chief minister Tarun Gogoi last evening, features 500 odd photographs of endangered floral and faunal resources endemic to the state. Assam Science Society plans to upgrade the gallery to a Natural History Museum in future.
The photo gallery has been set up with basic objectives of disseminating information on bio-diversity potential of the state as well as to spur biodiversity conservation efforts by members of the public.
The gallery which has been set up with funds from the Central Ministry of Environment and Science and MPLAD fund of Rajya Sabha MP Syed Anowara Taimur, is also equipped to facilitate audio visual presentation of films on wildlife and conservation efforts.
Assam and the Northeast as a whole is considered one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots of the world. Vice-Chancellor of North East Hill University, Prof Pramod Tandon, who graced the inauguration of the gallery, underlined the need for sustainable use of bio-resources of the region to prevent ruthless exploitation.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi while lauding the effort of Assam Science Society announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh to enable the society to procure books for its library.
