11th century inscription found in K'taka

Mysore, Oct 11 (UNI) An 11th century rare inscription, throwing light on merchants' association, was recently found at Shivarapura village in Chamarajanagara district of Karnataka.

Speaking to newspersons here, Dr H S Krishne Gowda and H M Nagaraj of the Mysore University Kannada department said one B M Basappa of the village found a stone with the rare inscription. A detailed study of the inscription in Kannada brought to light that the merchants of the area had formed an association and established links with their counterparts in countries like Sri Lanka, Iran, Afghanistan and Myanmar, besides within the country.

The inscription stated that the merchants' association had constructed a Bhagavathi temple and gifted it to the village. A symbol of a cow and calf found on the top of the stone indicated the gift.
