PIL for commuting death sentance to life term imprisonment

Chandigarh, Oct 10 (UNI) Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notices to the Union and Punjab governments for November six following a public interest litigation (PIL) which sought directions to commute the death sentence into life imprisonment of the convicts in Punjab jails, whose mercy petitions were pending for many years now with the President.

The notices were served by the Court's division bench comprising acting Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice S S Saron.

The PIL has been filed by Human Rights protagonist advocate Navkiran Singh after visiting Central jails at Amritsar, Ludhiana and Ferozepore, where 16 such prisoners were lodged for many years awaiting execution or clemency.
