Patil urges states to raise CISF-like security apparatus
Hyderabad, Oct 10 (UNI) Expressing 'concern' over the increasing terror strikes in the country, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today urged states to raise forces similar to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to effectively counter the challenges from new quarters, including terrorism.
''I will hold talks with all states in this regard'', he told reporters after inspecting the passing-out parade of the 21st batch of Assistant Commandants and the 30th batch of Sub-Inspectors/Executives of the CISF.
On the problem of biological and chemical warfare threats, he said a number of programmes were designed to provide training to the officers and men of CISF. Stressing on physical training and discipline, the Minister underscored the need for equipping the personnel with latest equipment to counter the threats.
''Left-wing extremism was another major threat, the law enforcing agencies would have to contend with, as 12 states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh were badly affected,'' he observed, while addressing the Assistant Commandants earlier.
''Recent attacks on security forces, politicians, railway stations and oil installations by these outfits reveal their intentions'', he noted, adding that whatever be the form, the foremost requirement was an effective security apparatus, which through effective physical security measures, would be in a position to frustrate the sinister plans of terrorists and militants.
Collaborating with the US, courses had been designed for tackling threats in the areas of cyber crime, forensics, setting up counter-terrorism centres, he said, adding that rapid strides taken by CISF in aviation security had instilled a sense of security among all air travellers. ''This has been made possible largely due to expertise, skills and attitude of the personnel deployed at airports. The passengers feel more secure today with the reassuring presence of courteous and professional CISF personnel at airports,'' he added.
''A fair share of credit for this should go to this academy for bringing about this transformation through focussed training and reorientation of its personnel'', Mr Patil added.
