Noted classical singer Saraswatibai Rane passes away

Pune, Oct 10 (UNI) Noted classical singer Swaraswatibai Rane died of old age here today.

She was 94. Swaraswatibai belonged to the Kirana Gharana and was best known for Chatrustra style of singing.

Swaraswatibai who began her career as a stage actor, had performed in musical plays like 'Saunshaya Kallol', 'Vidya Haran', 'Soubhadra', 'Man Apaman'.

She played the lead role in the Marathi film 'Sawitri' in 1936 and sang for 30 films including Marathi and Hindi.

She was the recepient of State Government award, Sangeet Ratna Puraskar, Yashwantrao Chavan Puraskar and Bal Gandhrav Puraskar.

Swaraswatibai was the younger sister of noted classical singer Hirabai Badodekar.
