ITO remanded in police custody till October 12 in graft case
Mumbai, Oct 10 (UNI) The special CBI court here today remanded Income Tax Officer (ITO) Ramesh Nakshikara, in police custody till October 12.
The CBI produced Nakshikara before the court of Judge R B Malik this afternoon and sought his custody.
The CBI told the court that the ITO was arrested yesterday from his office at Lalbaug while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a client for favouring an IT return review.
The CBI-ACB sleuths also raided the ITO's residence and seized Rs 165,000 in cash and some documents.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai, Tapan Kumar Chakraborty and three others, arrested by the CBI on October 5, were produced before Judge Malik for further extension of their custody in view of fresh evidence. The judge extended their custody till October 13.
While seeking an extension in the custody, the CBI told the court that Chakraborty and another arrested person, Pancratius Kiro, Customs appraiser, had obtained undue pecuniary advantage through corrupt and illegal means in connivance with the other two arrested -- Sanjay Tanaji Zeemur and Pramod Kumar Singh of Nikhil Shipping Agency, Mumbai.
The search conducted at Chakraborty's house had led to the recovery of large amount of cash, incriminating documents, gold and other articles, the court was told.
