India's Udapa goes down to Russia's Krylov in world Chess for blind
Margao, Oct 10 (UNI) India's leading player Srikrishna Udapa from Karnataka went down to Russia's Sergey Krylov after hard fough game in the opening round of the 11th (IBCA) individual World Chess championship for the blind at Varca in South Goa.
The Indian favourite with a rating of 2057 was pitted against a Russian giant (2393) and started off confidently with white pieces on the sicilian and Unusual variation. The Russian countered with a normal Sicilian defence but caught the Indian napping on a crucial 19th move on the board to seal the issue with black pieces. India Team had a few mixed results with Swapnil Shah held Russian Vladimir, unrated Gaurav Gagodia held an old horse in Milenkno Cabarkara of Serbia who is the only player to have participated in all the previous world championship for the blind since 1951.
Madan Bayayatkar, another unrated Indian, scored unexpected draw against much higher rated opponent. Madan held on to a draw against a very strong Russian opponent in Alexander Romanenkov. The other indian memebers Vasant Patil lost on time count, Darshan patel lost to Ukranian Viktor Konev and Shirish Patil wenst down to lindenmair Anton of Germany after a long battle of 6 hours.
The main attraction of day one was table number 10 where Sweden's 17-year-old Patric Berggen was playing against Ukraine's strong women player Zysolzolta Luibie. Patric gave a good performance and lost after an interseting game. The Russians, Polish and Ukranians made a strong start to their championship campaign.
