Govt will take measures to check female foeticide: Dikshit

New Delhi, Oct 10 (UNI) Expressing concern over deteriorating sex ratio in the country, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today reiterated that her Government will take all measures to curb female foeticide.

''The Government will tackle this problem by not only supporting and carrying out a comprehensive public awareness campaign but by also bringing about effective legislation that could help provide a fool-proof system of auditing records of ultra sound diagnostic centres,'' Ms Dikshit said after inaugurating a seminar on female foeticide.

The seminar ''Female Foeticide: Role of Voluntary Organsiations'' was organised by the Delhi Social Welfare Board.

The Chief Minister said modern technology combined has led to the mushrooming of sex determination clinics across India.

''It has also been observed that parents prefer abortion after being told about the possibility of a girl child,'' she added.

Ms Dikshit pointed out that more than one crore women die due to abortion.

''Only change in the attitude of the society would help in overcoming the problem of female foeticide. It is also unfortunate that girls are considered a burden because of the practice of dowry,'' she added.

Social Welfare Minister Yoganand Shastri also attended the seminar.
