Cong denies role in FIR against Fernandes

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) The Congress today refrained from commenting on former Defence Minister George Fernandes being named along with others in the FIR filed by the CBI in connection with the alleged pay offs in various defence deals amounting to Rs 1,800 crores.

''The Government agencies are doing their job and as a political party the Congress has no comment to make,'' Congress Media Cell Chairperson Janardan Dwivedi, told reporters here.

Mr Dwivedi rubbished the allegation that the CBI action came at the instance of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, saying it was all nonsense. ''Yeh sanatan arop hai (charges of this kind are always levelled without basis)'', he told TV news channels reacting to the charge, adding it was easy to level baseless allegations.

''This issue is not a new development.Action is bound to be taken if facts emerge,'' he said, and added the party had nothing to do with the case.

Asked about the timing of the filing of FIR against Mr Fernandes, Mr Dwivedi said the all the Government had their own method of working. Investigation was a continuing process, he noted.
