CESTAT bench institution in Ahmedabad tomorrow

Ahmedabad, Oct 10 (UNI) A new West Zonal bench of the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) will be inaugurated here tomorrow.

The bench will be inaugurated at the hands of CESTAT president R K Abichandani, a former judge of the Gujarat High Court.

CESTAT is an independent judicial forum to hear appeals against the order and decision passed by the Commissioners of Customs and Central excise under the Customs Act, Central Excise and Salt Act, and Service Tax under the Finance Act, according to a release here.

The tribunal is also empowered to hear appeals against the order passed by the designated authority with regards to anti-dumping duty under the Customs Tariff Act. In classification and valuation matters, the appeal against the order of the tribunal lies only next to the Supreme Court, the release said.

The main bench of the tribunal is located in New Delhi with its regional benches at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

Till now, litigants, advocates and representatives of trade and industry had to go to Mumbai bench to file or to defend their cases.
