Army XI beat Sikkim Sports Academi 2-1

Gangtok, Oct 10 (UNI) Army XI were on their winning spree defeating local favourite Sikkim Sports Academy (SSA) 2-1 in an action-packed quarter final league match of the 28th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament at the Palzor stadium here today.

Earlier, Army XI, had beaten Punjab Police 6-4 in the preliminary knock-out and defeated ANFA Nepal 1-0 in a quarter final league match.

Sports Academy qualified for the quarter finals, beating Calcutta Customs 2-0 in the preliminary knock-out.

The first half of the rain-soaked match ended with each team scoring one goal. Sanju Pradhan gave the lead for the S S A by slamming a goal in the 25th minute. Sanju Pradhan controlled the ball, dribbled past three defenders and successfully chipped in the goal by crossing the ball from the edge of the bex.

The lead was shortlived as 13 minutes later Army XI levelled the score through Mahesh Rai. Mohammad Ibrahim gave Army XI the lead in the 51st minute through a header.
