Imphal, Oct 9 (UNI) The Working Committee of Apunba Lup (WCAL), formed in the aftermath of the alleged killing of T H Manorama by Assam Rifles in July 2004, has expressed concern over violation of human rights in Manipur.

Sit-in protests were carried out at various parts of the state demanding repeal of the Act.

A large number of people attended sit-in protests at various places of the state. The stir was largely peaceful.

The WCAL leaders, who are now camping in the national capital, to take the movement forward coupled with the detention of Irom Sharmila at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), has welcomed the reported recommendation of the Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee on Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 to repeal the act. The Committee was formed in November 2004 to review the act after a widespread stir in Manipur.

The WCAL however, opposed the recommendation of the Committee to refer the provisions of the Act to other repressive laws like 'Unlawful Activities and Prevention Act, 1967'.

Four coordinators of the Apunba Lup, Laishram Babloo, Yumnam Devadutta, Phulindro Konsam and Ayekpam Langdon have condemned the continued imposition of the act.

The state government had withdrawn the Act from greater Imphal areas following the widespread stir in Manipur.

The WCAL has opposed the detention of Sharmila by Delhi Police.

Sharmila is on fast since November 2000 demanding repeal of the AFSPA and has been undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
