Vaidisova and Peer fail to read Russian script
MOSCOW, Oct 9 (Reuters) Czech Nicole Vaidisova and Israel's Shahar Peer proved spoilsports today when they overcame Russian opponents to reach the second round of the Kremlin Cup.
With at least one Russian player featured in each of the four women's matches scheduled for the opening day of the tournament, the host nation were hoping for a clean sweep.
But eighth seed Vaidisova ended wildcard Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova's challenge in the first round with a 6-3 6-3 win and Peer thrashed Elena Bovina 6-0 6-2.
Vera Zvonareva won the all-Russian battle against Vera Douchevina 6-3 6-2, while Elena Likhovtseva was quick to show Italy's Maria Elena Camerin the exit with a 6-0 6-1 victory.
The pair join compatriots Svetlana Kuznetsova, U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva, who each received a bye, in round two.
World number one Amelie Mauresmo is the top seed.
In the men's event, fifth-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri fell by the wayside when he was beaten 6-1 6-4 by Jan Hernych from the Czech Republic.
