'Umrao Jaan' auction to transform life of sex-workers

Varanasi, Oct 9 (UNI) Children of sex-workers here are likely to be transformed into classical artistes as proceeds generated through the auction of attires and props used in J P Dutta's magnum opus 'Umrao Jaan, will be used to dset up a music centre.

A music centre will be built in Varanasi from the proceeds of auction of props, apparels and other valuables, including the film set.

The centre will serve as the foundary for transforming children of sex-workers into classical musicians,'' said Ajit Singh, convenor of Gudiya -- an NGO working to uplift sex-workers since 1993.

The music of the remake of Muzaffar Ali's highly successful film was released in Mumbai on September 10.

''After an exhaustive survey, J P Dutta selected Gudiya, to channelise the proceeds of the auction singularly to uplift sex-workers by transforming the lives of their kids,'' claimed Ajit, who was accompanied to the music release by the minor daughter of a sex-worker from Varanasi.

Mr Dutta, has decided to auction the remains of his film, only to ensure no innocent girl is forced to become a sex-worker, Ajit claimed.

''The music centre will not only serve as a training institute for children of sex-workers aspiring to make it big in classical music, but render the rightful place to research the contribution of courtesans to Indian classical music and dance,'' Ajit said.

The convenor, however, did not divulge the date and place of the proposed auction, adding, it is likely after the release of the film, which is slated later this month.

The seasoned filmmaker has not only decided to fund the creation of musical centre but also adopted the little girl who accompanied Ajit to the music release function in Mumbai.

''Mr Dutta has promised to sponsor the entire education of the girl,'' Ajit added.
