Sensex brushes aside Korean nuke tests, ends flat

Mumbai, Oct 09: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) despite global tremors caused by North Korean nuclear tests, managed to close flat at 12,365.83.

Earlier today the North Korean nuclear test was announced by the Central News Agency of N Korea giving a new twist to the long standing crisis on nuclear disarmament involving USA, and other so called proliferators who distance themselves from the treaty.

The tests however did not impact the bourses for long, analyst pointed cautious approach to second quarter results, as primary reason for sensex spooking 6.98 points.

The key benchmark Asian indices all closed down in the red over the korean tests. The Japanese and Taiwanese markets however were closed today In a roller coaster ride, the sensex today swung 168.25 points touching a low of 12,261.49 and a high of 12,429.74 points.

Performance of major sectoral indices on BSE was mixed. Where the Capital Goods sector rose by 1.06 per cent and the IT sector by 0.74 per cent, the Oil&Gas declined 0.39 per cent and Bankex was down by 0.28 per cent.

However, the Midcap and the Smallcap indices managed to stay in green up by 0.65 and 1.18 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, the crude oil price has gone up by one percent to US Dollar 60 per barrel mark, which is said to have impacted the Oil and Refinery stocks in the negative.

The breadth in broader market however turned positive with 1,671 advances as against 855 declines, out of total 2,592 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Cipla up by 2.15 per cent to Rs 261.45, L&T up by 1.96 per cent to Rs 1,291.40, Gujarat Ambuja up by 1.48 per cent to Rs 123.75, Grasim Industries up by 1.47 per cent to Rs 2,558.05, Infosys technologies up by 1.35 per cent to Rs 1,897.30, TCS up by 0.97 per cent to Rs 1,002.75, Tata Motors up by 0.89 per cent to Rs 901.65, Bharti Airtel up by 0.79 per cent to Rs 463.85, ONGC up by 0.61 per cent to Rs 1,150.05 and Hindalco up by 0.54 per cent to Rs 177.15.

Besides the losers on index were Satyam Computers down by 49.92 per cent to Rs 406.15, HDFC down by 2.77 per cent to Rs 1,392.10, Reliance Energy down by 2.14 per cent to Rs 469.45, Tata Steel down by 1.96 per cent to Rs 526.35, Reliance Communciations down by 1.77 per cent to Rs 347.50, NTPC down by 0.84 per cent to Rs 129.55, ICICI down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 697.00, Reliance Industries down by 0.77 per cent to Rs 1,154.10, HLL down by 0.73 per cent to Rs 243.50 and ACC down by 0.64 per cent to Rs 980.45.
