Srinagar, Oct 9: 'Nownihalon Key Liye Naya Sawera,' a Prime Minister's scheme for rehabilitation of orphans belonging to areas ravaged by the devastating earthquake on October 8 last year has been formally launched in Jammu and Kashmir.

During his visit to quake-hit Teethwal village in Tangdhar area of Kupwara district yesterday, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad presented pass books to orphans.

The scheme has been introduced for the adoption of those orphans who lost their parents in the temblor.

Under the scheme, the Prime Minister has granted Rs 5 lakh each to orphans who lost both parents in the devastating earthquake and Rs 2.5 lakh each for those who lost either father or mother.

The amount has been deposited in bank accounts in the name of the beneficiary orphan. The profit earned would be utilised in his or her education and the entire sum could be withdrawn only after the orphan turned a major and utilised to settle down in life.
