Instant Money Order service launched at guwahati post office

Guwahati, Oct 09 (UNI) Minister of State for Communication and IT Shakeel Ahmed today launched an instant Money Order service at the Government Post Office (GPO) here today, on World Post Day, enabling the people of Guwahati to send amounts ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 50,000 to major Indian cities within seconds.

Mr Ahmed said that he reviewed the performances of the department with higher officials of BSNL yesterday and asked the officers to be more competitive and customer-friendly.

He also stressed the need of orientation training to the officers to make them customer friendly.

Mr Ahmed further said that all 19 head post offices of Asom have been modernised and computerised. Counter operations in 91 large sub- post offices in the state have also been computerised.

He further revealed that 125 double-handed and 360 single-handed post offices would be taken up for computerisation under the current five year plan as a special package for North Eastern Region.

By March 2008, Asom Post expects to have the biggest network of 630 computerised and networked post offices offering network enabled, value-added services for the people of Asom, the minister said.

He stated that the Assam Post has been registering an annual growth of 20 percent in revenue on premium services such as speed post, express post, media post every year.

Assam post has also launched retailing of Assam Tea through postal outlets in different states earning around Rs. 1.5 lakhs Mr Ahmed informed.

Assam postal circle with a network of 4006 post offices in the state forms the backbone for small savings schemes. The number of savings Accounts is 38,67,599 with a total aggregate amount of 1439.09 crore, he added.
