GMHK LIONS XI defeats defending champion BSF Jalandhar 3-1
Gangtok, Oct 9 (UNI) Defending champions BSF Jalandhar today suffered a humilitating 3-1 defeat in the hands of GMHK Lions XI in a quarterfinal league match of the 28th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament here today.
Aggressive power play and better coordination helped the Lions XI to take the match in their favour with applause from packed crowds in the Palzor stadium.
The first half of the game ended with the score 1-1 with each team trying to outplay the other.
BSF Jalandhar, the two-time champion failed to live up to its reputation and succumbed to the onslaught of the Nigerians.
BSF, however, drew the first blood when Boy Singh scored a goal for the team in the third minute.
But Oknonkwo Celestine of Lions equalised in the 31st minute when he got a pass from his team mate Nnajibu Eze in front of the goal post and tapped it across the BSF goal keeper Machhinder Singh.
After the breather the BSF boys were seemed to have been tired and the Lions team was seen dominating the game.
The Nigerians got their second sucess in 57 minute when Okegbemiro Abdul who substituted Okonkwo Celestine a few minutes earlier eassayed ball after he went passed the BSF custodian and netted the ball easily.
The third goal came from Subair Muri six minutes laster. Muri dribbled pass a couple of defenders deceived the goalie and slammed the goal.
BSF had chances and troubled the Lion's defence with some nippy moves a couple of times which led to a number of penalty corners.
But the unlucky BSF could not covert any of them to goals.
