AON to provide internet service in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Oct 9: Bangladesh has signed a deal with Always on Network (AON), a U.S.-based communications service company, to provide Internet services in the country , officials said on Monday.

Under the deal, the company will provide training, set up Internet exchanges, expand Internet networks across the country and introduce e-commerce, officials at the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology said.

AON will invest million to implement the projects over the next 10 years.

The company will provide free Internet services to 80,000 primary schools across Bangladesh, they said, adding that initially they will bring 85 percent of the country under the service and the remaining 15 percent will benefit from the programme later on.

The monthly cost of the service has been fixed at for individuals and 0 for businessmen.

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission issued a license to the AON early this year to set up Internet networks across the country.
