Lafarge to increase capacity by 3.5 mn tonnes

New Delhi, Oct 8: Lafarge, world's biggest maker of building materials, has launched a project to increase its production capacity by 3.5 million tonnes at its Sonadih plant in Chhattisgarh after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government in this regard.

The project will be implemented in two phases spanning over the period of five years and will take an investment of 75 Euros per new tonne of capacity.

Lafarge had announced to set up a new three million cement plant in Himachal Pradesh in September this year, which together with the new project will more than double its total cement production capacity in India, taking it from about 5.5 million tonnes to nearly 12 million tonnes within the next five years.

In India, Lafarge has a market share of about 20 per cent.
