Form an expert review committee, MDAVO demands

Imphal, Oct 8 (UNI) The Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation (MDAVO) in Manipur has demanded the formation of an Expert Review Committee to check whether the multipurpose project poses any threat to the environment and the indegenous people.

MDAVO chairman R Kasar said they would oppose the project until it is reviewed properly and threatened of a massive stir if their demands were not fulfiled.

'' The state Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) department should work in the interest of the affected people,'' Mr Kasar said.

The Rs 517 crore Multipurpose Project, located at Ukhrul, Senapati and Imphal junction, was sanctioned in 1980 and is scheduled to be completed by 2008, official sources said.

Mr Kasar said the 66 metre high and 1074 metre long dam would destroy the environment and leave the people to face unwanted problems.
