After Navy, IAF ensures protecting India's interests abroad

Hindon, Ghaziabad, Oct 8 (UNI) After the Navy, the India Air Force today asserted its capability to protect India's interests beyond the country's shores.

''Apart from being the guardian of Indian airspace and guaranteeing her territorial interets, the IAF also ensures the vital interests of a resurgent India, which extends well beyond its shores,'' Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi said, addressing the parade at the Hindon Airbase.

''With a vision of 'Strategic Reach', based on national interests, we are today a trans-oceanic force capable of protecting and projecting indian interests..'' He said the IAF can, as in the past, provide humanitarian assistance to friendly nations in distress.

''As an important part of our external commitments, the IAF's contribution to UN missions remains steadfast and praiseworthy.'' In an bid to dispel reports about the dwindling strength of its combat squadrons, he said the IAF was on the threshold of a quantum leap with the upcoming purchase of advanced muti-role fighters, mid-air refuellers and airborne early warning and control systems.

''Licensed production of the SU-30 MKI is proceeding apace, as is the process of selecting the IAF's future multi-role combat aircraft. We expect the Hawk trainers to be inducted soon and the first squadron of the LCA during the XIth Plan.'' He said the IAF's combat strength was planned to measure-up to its challenges and responsibilities. Airlift capabilities would also be enhanced.

''Air defence is being strengthened with modern sensors and weapons systems. The Aerostat radars are close to operational status and the AWACS will be with us on schedule.'' UNI YJ/DG VD MIR RN1657
