Varun Gandhi's candidature not opposed: Chouhan

Indore, Oct 7: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clarified that he did not oppose the candidature of Mr Varun Gandhi as BJP nominee for the October 30 byelection in Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency, represented by him earlier.

''Reports about opposing Mr Varun Gandhi's candidature at the BJP Central Election Committee in New Delhi yesterday were baseless'', he told reporters here last night.

''It was a media speculation about fielding either Varun Gandhi or my wife Sadhana Singh as BJP candidate from Vidisha'', he said.

Mr Chouhan said state PHE Minister Rampal Singh, who was nominated as BJP nominee from Vidisha, was more competent and had mass-base. The party will win both Vidisha and Malehra seats, he added.

On the Governor reportedly seeking a report from the state government on the BJP workers assaulting police personnel during senior party leader L K Advani's arrival at Bhopal airport, Mr Chouhan said the police was on the job.
