New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Police administration has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the death penalty awarded to two brothers, who are scheduled to be hanged on October 16 for killing four members of a family including two children in the year 2000.

Gurvail Singh and Judge Singh could not approach the apex court due to extreme poverty and illiteracy. Their death sentence was confirmed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Moved by the plight of the two convicts, the administration decided to approach the apex court on their behalf, challenging the death penalty awarded to them by an Amritsar trial court.

No Human Rights organisation has come forward to raise its voice against the capital punishment handed down to the duo.

However, a lot of hue and cry was being raised by these Human Rights organisations against the death sentence awarded to Mohammad Afzal Guru in the Parliament attack case in which five policemen were killed and many wounded.

Guru's family has petitioned President A P J Abdul Kalam seeking clemency for him.

The appeal filed on behalf of the two brothers is likely to come up for a hearing before the apex court next week and the petition will be heard before October 16 so that appropriate order on interim stay against execution may be obtained from the Supreme Court.

The police administration has taken the step in the interest of justice so that poverty and illiteracy of the convicts did not block the administration of justice and their conviction may be adjudicated upon by the highest court of the land.
