Indebted farmer commits suicide in Punjab

Sangrur, Oct 7 (UNI) A marginal farmer who was in debt today committed suicide by consuming insecticide, while three of his family members are battling for life in a hospital.

A police report here said that Sukhdev Singh after an argument with his wife over financial matters, took out a bottle of liquid insecticides and consumed it in his house in Khali village this morning. He then caught hold of his wife Sukhwinder Kaur (28) and five year old daughter Lovepreet and forced the insecticide down their throats.

According to the police, Raju the nine year old son of the farmer ran away from the house after seeing his father advancing towards him with the insecticide bottle. Mohinder Singh, the aged father of Sukhdev also consumed the insecticide when he saw his son, daughter-in-law and grand daughter screaming for help.

While Sukhdev died in the house, his wife, daughter and father were rushed to a private hospital in Raikot by fellow villagers.

Their condition was stated to be serious.
