Increase credit to micro units: Mahabir tells banks

New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) Minister for Small Scale Industries and Rural and Agro Industries Mahabir Prasad today urged the public sector banks to give more credit to micro units to help them create more job opportunities.

He regretted that very few public sector banks were following the RBI guidelines to keep 60 per cent of the credit given to small scale industries for micro units.

Speaking at the SSI National Convention where Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented the Coir Industry Awards and Revi Karunakaran Memorial Best Workmen Awards, Mr Prasad pointed out that micro units had the highest employment potential as they constituted 99 per cent of the small scale units.

''Hence, I urge the banks to give more credit to micro units and on time,'' he said.

The Minister said his departments were implementing programmes to make these units competitive in the global environment.

He said a promotional package for these units would be announced soon.
