Four new meet records in Varsities Aquatics

Chandigarh, Oct 7 (UNI) Rehan Poncha of Bangalore University hogged the limelight by improving upon his own two meet records on a day when four new records were rewritten in the All India Inter-University Aquatic (men and women) Championship at the Panjab University Swimming Pool here today.

Rehan first improved upon his own record in 200 metres Individual Medlay as he swam the distance in 2:14.47 against his own last year's old record of 2:15.09. Nalang Kapil of Shivaji (2:16.70) and Abhishek V of Bangalore (2:16.98) finished second and third, respectively.

Rehan went on to better his own meet record in the 200 metres backstroke as he clocked 2:16.35 seconds. The Bangalore swimmer had established the old record of 2:17.04 in 2005. In a close race, Nalang Kapil of Shivaji clocked 2:16.76 and also improved upon the old record. Srinand Srinivas of RGUHS, Bangalroe finished third in 2:21.84.

Varun Divgikar of Mumbai shattered the old record in the 50 metres freestyle for men. Varun clocked 24.27 seconds against the old record of 24.53 seconds which was established by Athul Krishnaraj S of Kerala last year.

Delhi University's Sandeep Sejwal clocked 2:33.43 seconds to write his name in the record books in the 200 metres breaststroke for men.

The old record was standing in the name of Anil of Maharishi Dayanand University of Rohtak since 2001.

200m backstroke: 1 Rehan Poncha (Bangalroe) 2:16.35 MNR (Old 2:17.04 set by Rehan Poncha in 2005); 2 Nalang Kapil (Shivaji) 2:16.76; 3 Srinand Srinivas ((RGUHS, Bangalore) 2:21.84.

50m butterfly: 1 Aniketh Albert D'Souza (Mangalore) 26:82; 2 Rehan Poncha (Bangalore) 27.22; 3 Varun Divgikar (Mumbai) 27.34.

200m breaststroke: 1 Sandeep Sejwal (Delhi) 2:33.43 NMR (old record of 2:36.46 was created by Anil of MDU Rohtak in 2001); 2 Abhishek V (Bangalore) 2:38.66; 3 Ajinkya Kalele (RTM Nagpur) 2:43.48.

Women:200m Individual Medlay: 1 Ghorpade Pooja (Pune) 2:44.10; 2 Divya MS (Bangalore) 2:44.15; 3 Ritu Sejwal (Delhi) 2:49.82.

200m breaststroke: 1 Divya MS (Bangalore) 3:00.98; 2 Tejashree G (Mumbai) 3:07.01; 3 Mrudula D (VTU Belgaum) 3:16.04.
