People in the nearby Hirehalli, who heard the huge sound, moved their live stock and valuables in time before water entered their village. A farm house was completely destroyed while a temple was fully submerged.

The dam which was constructed in 1983 to irrigate 17,400 acres of land had filled up for the first time this season since its completion. Technicians from Davangere who had erected the crest gates had been summoned.

Meanwhile, local MLA M P Venkatesh, who visited the affected Hirehalli this morning was manhandled by irate villagers accusing him of not taking steps to construct more dams.
