BSF Jalandhar beat Sikkim police 2-0

Gangtok, Oct 7 (UNI) Propelled by a brilliant brace from striker Surjit Singh, defending champion BSF Jalandhar trounced local favourite Sikkim Police 2-0 in a quarter final league match of the 28th All India Governor's Gold Cup here today.

While Sikkim Police moved to the quarter final after defeating Tibetan National Sports Academy, BSF, Jalandhar, were given a direct entry into the quarter final.

A spirited BSF team, which dominated the match, pulled off a memorable victory by winning their first match in the tournament.

Leading the BSF charge was Surjit Singh whose goal in the ninth minute boosted the spirit of his team mates and a spectacular goal from Mandeep Singh set the stage for BSF celebration.

The Jalandhar team drew the first blood when the ball rebounded after hitting the leg of a defender and Surjit Singh lost no time to slot in.

The second goal came after Mandeep Singh headed a long ranger from his team mate Boy Singh and hit the net.

The Sikkim Police were luck less despite a lot of cheers from the crowd.

The margin of the victory could have been more but for the spirited defence of Suman Dewan of Sikkim Police. Dewan thwarted many attempts of the BSF and was able to limit the victory margin.

In a preliminary qualifying match, Assam Rifles shocked the two time runners-up Arambagh Bangladesh by defeating them 3-1.

Assam Rifles led 2-1 at half time with goals from Abel Sema and Thoiba Singh in 36th and 38th minutes respectively.

A goal from Akum Ao of Assam Rifle in the dying moment finally put the game beyond the Bangladesh team.

Arambagh's Mogibr Rahman Ritu drew the first blood by knocking a shot into the net after two minutes but the team failed to keep up the pace and listed out.
