Kolkata, Oct 7 (UNI) The BJP today joined other Opposition parties in extending support to the Trinamool Congress-sponsored October 9 12-hour ''Bangla Bandh'', but called for the exemption of the IT sector from its purview.

Announcing the party's solidarity with its electoral ally, BJP state general secretary Rahul Singh said they fully endorsed AITC supremo Mamata Banerjee's stand against the alleged forceful acquisition of multi-crop land at Singur for the Tata's proposed small car factory.

'' Though neither are we against the Tatas nor do we want them to withdraw from West Bengal as it might send a wrong signal to the rest of the country, we only want the factory on non-agricultural land near Singur, '' Mr Sinha said.

He reiterated his party's full support to the bandh, called to protest the unprovoked police atrocities on Ms Banerjee and several of her party workers on September 25.

At the same time, he appealed to the AITC leadership to consider exemption of the IT sector from the purview of the bandh on the line of other emergency services.

On the role of the Congress, which had also supported the bandh along with the Samajwadi Party and the CPI(ML) Liberation, the BJP leader charged it with toeing ''double standards,'' by opposing the ruling Left Front in West Bengal and supporting all its demands at the Centre.

To a query, Mr Sinha said the BJP workers in the state had been asked to take active part for making the bandh successful through peaceful means.
