31 brain fever cases reported in Bellary

Bellary, Karnataka, Oct 7 (UNI) Notwithstanding the vaccination drive against Japanese Encephalitis, commonly called brain fever, in the district, one death and 31 cases of affliction of the deadly disease have been reported.

Official sources here said the cases have been reported from 12 villages through 12 primary health centres. As many as 16 children were being treated at VIMS hospital. Incidentally, all the 31 children admitted for treatment were administered the Chinese vaccine.

Bellary taluk reported the maximum number of cases at 17, followed by Koppal district four, Raichur three and one case each from Chitradurga and Bijapur districts. Five cases have been admitted from the bordering Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.

The death occurred at Emmiganur village, the sources said.

The disease had hit Bellary district, where the vaccination drive was implemented along with four other districts in the country, hard.

The sources said 12 cases of dengue had been reported in the district headquarters hospital. However, all the cases have been discharged after giving treatment.

Till yesterday, 39,308 people were reported to be suffering from Chikungunya, according to figures available at district headquarters hospital. The number of people treated at private nursing homes have not been taken into account.
