Undeterred by criticism, Govt clears 25 more SEZs

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Undeterred by a widespread criticism, the Board of Approvals (BoA) in the Commerce Ministry today cleared 25 new proposals for setting up the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) including those in the Left-ruled West Bengal.

With these clearances the total number of formal approvals has become 189 and in-principle approvals as 145.

Of the 25 SEZs cleared by the BoA today, eight were formally approved while 17 received in-principle approvals. The meeting considered a total of 88 proposals for setting up SEZs in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Notable amongst the approvals are: Aluminium SEZ by Hindalco Industries in Madhya Pradesh, Suzlon Infrastructure for high tech engineering, two multi-product SEZs by New Kolkata International Development Pvt Ltd (a company promoted by Salim Group of Indonesia) in West Bengal with an investment of Rs 12,500 crore.

Besides, three proposals from Videocon Realty and Infrastructures Ltd have been approved for setting up two multi-products and one eleconics SEZ in West Bengal.
