Sensex closes flat, traders book profit ahead of weekend

Mumbai, Oct 06: The Bombay Stock Exchange today closed flat at 12,372.81 and for the first time saw a negative weekly growth after ten weeks of sustained gains, as selling pressure bogged heavyweight counters.

Global benchmark indices too were range bound prior to the US jobs data expected today.

Also, the all time high reached on May 11, 2006 is still illusive for BSE Sensex, after the consistent performance of 12,300 and above, for past one month. Cautiousness on part of traders ahead of second quarter results is cited as the reason why index is not breaching the 12,700 level.

Earlier, Sensex opened in a narrow range and continued to remain range bound through out the day, touching a high of 12,434.22 and a low of 12,357.69, with a marginal swing of 76.53 points.

The breadth in the broader market however, was positve in favour of 1,592 advances as against 933 declines out of total 2,577 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.

The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 3,686 crore compared to Thursday's Rs 3,681 crore.

Amongst the sectoral indices on BSE the lsoers were led by FMCG sector down by 1.17 per cent and was followed by Health Care sector down by 0.43 per cent and the Bankex sector down by 0.27 per cent.

The major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Hindalco up by 2.12 per cent to Rs 176.20, Reliance Communications up by 1.56 per cent to Rs 353.75, Gujarat Ambuja up by 1.04 per cent to Rs 121.85, Reliance Industries up by 0.69 per cent to Rs 1,163.05, BHEL up by 0.58 per cent to Rs 2,324.90, ACC up by 0.41 per cent to Rs 986.0, HDFC bank up by 0.39 per cent to Rs 934.20, Infosys technpology up by 0.34 per cent to Rs 1872.05, L&T up by 0.33 per cent to Rs 1,266.55 and Bharti Airtel up by 0.20 per cent to Rs 460.00.

Besides the losers on the index were HLL down by 1.86 per cent to Rs 245.30, HDFC down by 1.54 per cent to Rs 1430.60, ITC down by 1.44 per cent to Rs 184.70, Wipro down by 1.39 per cent to Rs 513.65, Grasim indusries down by 1.04 per cent to Rs 2520.90, Satyam Computers down by 0.84 per cent to Rs 811.05, SBI down by 0.69 per cent to Rs 1,031.90, TCS down by 0.59 per cent to Rs 993.10, Reliance Energy down by 0.58 per cent to Rs 479.70 and Maruti Udyog down by 0.52 per cent to Rs 942.70.
