Nikkei opens bit weaker ahead of long weekend

Tokyo, Oct 6: The Nikkei average edged down on Friday as core blue chips such as Canon Inc. were hit by profit-taking after Tokyo's quick catch-up rally with the New York market this week and ahead of a three-day weekend.

The Nikkei was down 0.08 percent or 13.06 points at 16,436.27 as of 0002 GMT after rising 2.28 percent a day earlier to its highest close in almost five months.

The broad TOPIX index was down 0.06 percent at 1,632.19.
