Heavy rain leaves Andaman road flooded

Port Blair, Oct 6 (UNI) Life was disrupted in Andaman and Nicobar islands since last night following torrential rains which clogged city roads and stalled traffic.

Between 0830 hrs and 1430 hrs today, the islands received about 75.1 MM of rainfall, Naval Meteorological Department sources said.

Yesterday these islands had received 42.4 MM of rainfall, which too was above the normal. Many low lying areas were waterlogged, while places like Mohanpura, School line, Brichgunj were the worst affected.

The heavy rains ruined the holiday plans of thousands of tourists. Some flights from the mainland had already been cancelled today due to the downpour.

Reports were also pouring in of similar deluge in other scattered islands of this archipelago. However, there was no report of any casualty or loss of property, police officials told UNI.

According to reports of Civil Met department in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the tropical belt has received more than 2600 MM of rainfall since January 2006.
