Army XI beat Punjab Police 6-4 and Sikkim Sports Academy trounced Ca

Gangtok, Oct 6 (UNI) Three time champions Punjab Police were knocked out of the 28th All India Governor's Gold Cup after Army XI defeated them by 6-4 in a preliminary qualifying match today.

The Army XI beat Punjab Police, who won the championship in 1982, 1983 and 1994, in a tie breaker after a 1-1 stalemate in the scheduled and extra time.

M G Ramachandran, Nargeinilal, Trinakalasavu, Mahesh Rai and Raghu Kumar successfully scored all the five shots for the Army XI to celebrate its win over the Punjab Police.

Though Pradeep Singh, Gurjit Sigh and Sumit Bali were able to convert their shots into goals fpr the Punjab Police but the Army custodian R Singh denied Sarbjit Singh any success.

Earlier Nargenilal made the first move for the Army by scoring the first goal in the seventh minute. In the 57th minute Harjinder Singh got the all important goal for the Punjab police and equalised the score.

In another match Sikkim Sports Academy (SSA)beat CalcuttaCustom 2-0 in a tightly fought match.

Bikash Jairu scored both the goals for the SSA.Bikash scored the first goal just two minutes after the match started and made no mistake to convert a penalty shot awarded to the SSA just eight minutes before the long whistle after its player Dawa Lepcha fell on the ground following a foul played by one of the players of the opposite team.

Army XI will now meet ANFA Nepal on Sunday and Sports Academy will play Army XI on October 10 in quarter final league match.

Tomorrow Sikkim Police will with last year Champion BSF Jalandhar in quarterfinal league match and Arambagh Bangladesh will lock horn with Assam Rifle in preliminary qualifying match.
