UP pegs sugar production at 73 lakh tonnes

Lucknow, Oct 5 (UNI) With 134 sugarmills expected to function in Uttar Pradesh this crushing season, the sugar production has been pegged at 73 lakh tonnes in the state.

The new crushing season commenced from October 1, state sugarcane commissioner Rahul Bhatnagar said here today.

A total of 26.61 lakh hectare has been brought under sugarcane crop, which is 3.52 lakh hectare more than last year.

Last crushing season, about 1,347 lakh tonnes sugarcane was produced in the sugarmills' reserved area. The expected corrosponding figure for the current year is 1,590 lakh tonnes.

Last year, UP had topped sugar production in the country with 114 sugarmills producing a record 57.84 lakh tonnes sugar by crushing 608 lakh tonnes sugarcane.

This year, the 134 sugarmills are expected to collectively crush 760 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.

This year, 19 new sugarmills would start crushing. The defunct Rampur sugarmill of the state sugar corporation is also being restarted.

Till June 30, 2006, cen per cent payment of about Rs 6,900 crore to sugarcane farmers had been made.

Mr Bhatnagar said the state government had made proper arrangements for the availability of adequate quantity of sugarcane to sugarmills.

High yielding and improved varieties of seeds will also be made available to sugarcane cultivators for winter sugarcane sowing.
