Trinamool appeals to people to support bandh

Kolkata, Oct 5 (UNI) The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) today appealed to the people to support the October nine state-wide 12-hour bandh.

The bandh has been called to protest the alleged police attack on party supremo Mamata Banerjee, who upped the ante against the acquisition of agricultural land for the Tata Motors' small car project at Singur.

''We are in favour of development in the state, but not at the cost of agricultural land. The ruling party is grabbing multi-crop land for the Tata Group and the action smacks of fascist attitude,'' senior AITC leader Partho Chatterjee told newspersons here.

Party workers would take to the streets to foil any government attempt to frustrate the bandh, he said and warned that the government will be responsible for any eventuality.

''We have already instructed the party workers to organise street meetings, rallies, processions to make the bandh successful,'' he added.

To a query, he said essential services had been exempted from the purview of the bandh.
