Suryapet gets ISO certificate for waste management

Hyderabad, Oct 5 (UNI) Suryapet Municipality in Andhra Pradesh has become the country's first ULB (Urban Local Body) to earn ISO 14000:2004 certification for applying envinroment management systems for solid waste handling.

Suryapet has won recognition from the UN for best waste management practices of UN Habitat and received the 'Green City Award'.

Releasing a compact disc on Suryapet's achievement of 'dust bin free and zero-based solid waste management' Municipal Administration Minister K Ranga Rao today urged other ULBs to emulate Suryapet, By strictly implementing door-to-door collection, penalizing those who littered roads and drains and removing all community bins, Suryapet had not only made the town dustbin and garbage free, but had also earned money by selling vermicompost, providing additional employment to urban poor women, he pointed out.
